News for Epic Words!

Roll For Initiative!

No, we're not going to fight you. We just wanted you to know about our friends at the Roll For Initiative Podcast ( They just posted an interview with Epic Words creator, Jonathan, and we thought you might want to hear about some of the upcoming features for the site and perhaps learn a thing or two about psionics while you're at it. If you want to skip right to the interview, go to 25:10.

Roll For Initiative is a weekly podcast about 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Whether you play 1st Edition or are just a bit nostalgic for the good ol' days of AD&D, you have to check these guys out! This podcast will remind you why you fell in love with gaming in the first place. Find them on iTunes and listen to them on your way to work.

While we have your attention, we wanted to let you know about some other updates. Epic Supporters can now easily embed images they've uploaded to the campaign in their journal and wikis. Just click the image tool in the editor and a list of images available to the campaign show up. A simple little time saver!

You've Leveled Up!

We're introducing a new concept called "XP Tracks". Essentially, it's the level progression for your characters. As a character goes from one level to the next, the player will be notified by email. That way, they'll remember to go to Epic Words and update his/her character sheet! Campaigns will automatically inherit an XP Track for it's rule system if it's available. If we haven't gotten around to setting up an XP Track for your rule system, you can always create one yourself just for your campaign.

September Updates!

We here at Epic Words have been working on a boat load of new features for you. Most have been based off of user requests. In fact, you may have noticed some of them already while we were testing and working out the kinks. Many thanks to the folk who gave us feedback.

Dice Rollers

We've added secure dice rolls to our paid features list. Epic Supporters and their campaign players can now post dice rolls in their campaign journals. Of course, you may ask "But why do I need a dice roller on-line when I have my cool pepto-pink set with me at all times?" Because Epic Words roller results are generated when the campaign journal is updated, and embedded to prevent any tweaking. (not that you would ever do that, even if your 16th level paladin's life was at risk).

NPCs have a voice

The Game Master can add campaign journal posts as a Non Player Character. Here's how to add and NPC: Head to the Reference Wiki and add an NPC flag to one of your References. Heck, you can even add a thumbnail image for it. Simple!

Tag, you're it!

Tag your campaign journal posts like the uber-organized gaming pro that you are. This will help you search through your campaign's journal lickety-split. We have even more enhancements planned for the journal tags, so start marking up those posts!

Wikis with kids and uploads

By popular demand, we've added a couple new features to our wikis. First, we've improved the way they can be organized. Now, you can create sub-wikis as children of other wikis. These child-wikis have all the same features, except they are only listed when viewing their parents. Now the main wiki page doesn't have to be cluttered up by the whole family tree.

Second, you can now upload HTML files to a wiki page. (yes, we said upload!) While not all formatting and html tags are supported, we'll do our best to convert them to something viewable. This can be a big time saver if you're importing large pages from another site.

That's it for now.
We hope you find these handy.

We're on the list!

New Feature: Gaming Groups

Do you have a group of gaming buddies that are not in the same campaigns? Maybe you can't decide which adventure to play, until you know who's available? We now have Gaming Groups for just such an occasion.

You and your peeps can sign up for a Gaming Group and schedule general events for the gang. Later on, you can assign the events to a campaign, or just leave it as an alternate-game-night for the group. We've included a private Gaming Group forum too, in case you want to discuss what board game to play, or who's bringing the Doritos.

To start your own group, look for the link called "New Gaming Group" in the right-hand navigation. Invite your gaming buddies to join, and start planning your next of mayhem.

New Features: the Dashboard and an Example Campaign

We just added a pair of new features: the Campaign Dashboard, and a new Example Campaign (i.e. ‘help’)

- Dashboard, Take 2 ------------

There has always been a campaign dashboard of sorts on the journal page, but it wasn’t “officially” hailed as that. Now there is a Dashboard like we mean it, and the campaign journal has its own page. On the dashboard you will find the “about” text for your campaign, the setting, the GM, and a better snapshot of the recent entries on components like the journal, wikis, characters, and more.

- Hey, can you give me an example? -------------

We put together an Example Campaign that shows off the site’s features, and provides you, our good interweb buddies, with tips and tricks on how to use them. (aka: site help) You will find the link on the Epic Words home page. We will continue to write additional help text, but there is a bunch in there to start with.
